Main Organizer Institution | National College of Social Workers of Romania, Iasi Branch.

Co-organizers | LUMEN Research Center in Social & Humanistic Sciences, Romania & Valahia University from Targoviste, Romania

Overview |

Social work profession should be characterized by a reflective equilibrium based theory, the professional experiences being triggered by the values that give the nature of this profession.

In our opinion, the professional values are operational ones, which correlate the organizational constitutive values and the effective practice of the professionals. Professionalization in social work implies a powerful adherence of the professionals to the values that are deeply human and internalize them, thus bringing their contribution to the development of the profession, in the spirit of constitutive values of justice and the public good.

Ethical decisions are the result or ability built by the context of previous moral development, the interest for ethics inside organizations being determined by a series of social factors.

In our vision, the social services are grounded in social action because they are directly interested in the efficiency of transforming the social space, while supervision, both the classical professional one and the supervision of ethics, is based on the communicative action. The strategic action and the instrumental action can be seen as forms of social action, which aim at the institution of the relationship of power. The character of the communicative action of social work is given by the relationship beneficiary – social worker centred on social change, based both on behaviour modification, as in the influence of the social services on the social environment of the beneficiary, in order to facilitate their social integration.

Scope | The purpose of the workshop is to debate social practice under the challenges of contemporary ethics. There are expected papers approaching the issue of current social work from the perspective of the governing ethical values, at theoretical and practical level, without drawing a precise disciplinary border. We encourage the transdisciplinary approaches that exceed the existing cleavage between theoretical and empirical. We invite social workers, academics, bachelor, masters and doctoral students interested in ethics in social services.
